WIN PRO ATTACK no cure

For about a month now my computer has been under constant attack from a virus that my security software cannot clean out. It comes across as a bogus pop up ad for a virus scanner called WinPro. It is reeking havoc on many aspects of computer functions. I am about to do a total wipe of the hard drive if I cant get the thing cleaned out. One weird thing it does is convert my asterisk key into a hotkey that does a quick search. Rebooting the system clears that but it happens over and over. The worst thing is how many times the computer crashes I assume due to the virus.

CA security has given me some exotic actions to take to clean the virus but I am not savvy enough to do it.

Any suggestions?

What anti-virus software are you running ?

Have you tried running it in Safe Mode (press F8 when booting)

Yes I've tried the f8 thing but I get lost.

No..not Viropro it is called WinPro..a big red pop up that gets right through my CA protection over and over and now has placed some virus in the computer.

But! Today I did a call up update from CA (as opposed to the usual auto updates) and it seems to have calmed the computer down a bit. Just maybe CA has gotten hip to this virus and found a way to knock it out.

Oh for the days of the early non virus infected internet, days of pure data, no graphics, just text....Well of course everything available now is very cool but simplicity seems to have gone out the window.

Try a full online scan with TrendMicro HouseCall; it will check and eliminate all kinds of infections, including viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

You may try to run the OS in ram as a method to avoid infection of vrius, once your computer is infected, just reboot it and all viruses will be destroyed.

There isn't an easy straight forward fix for this, I suggest you post a hijackthis log at Malware Removal http://forum.malwareremoval.com/

wow I never knew you could do that with xp, thats a really good idea though.

But i think a better alternative would be keeping a image of your drive using something like norton ghost. Then if you get a virus just go back to your image.

of course if I use the diskless,the speed is faster,but what does production shou I use ? The productions are too more!
