I thought this a marvellous performance, in many ways beating the Aussies at their own 'competitive' game. If Wilko had been on full form the score could have been even more convincing.

An England try would have made me feel greater satisfaction and belief, but you'd have to say that wasn't the principal strategy adopted to carve this out as a win, so maybe the confidence that will now come from knowing they can achieve what they want with full-on power play and tactical intelligence will provide the real key for the rest of their tournament?

The only question tonight is whether the extra motivation of 'showing what we're made of' to this over-confident Australian side - and its Administrators who recently bad mouthed us - will be re-produceable in our next games? But whatever happens, I think the 'sport' is going to win now and that's how I prefer it.

:good:

I forgot to say how much I enjoyed the after-match interview with Nick Easter, the England No 8.

I have been impressed with his playing but was extra tickled by his smart and fiesty 'this is how it is mate' attitude. When the reporter first put the microphone under his chin and asked the usual dummy question: "How do you feel after that win?", he narrowed his eyes at the dummy and said with a nice edge of sarcasm: "Well, good .. actually. And borrowing a quote from Nick Faldo after he won the Open, I'd like to thank the press from the heart of my bottom! You guys have given us the siege mentality we needed to pull off this win. We were tremendous in the front five. The pack of forwards out-scrummaged them and destroyed them up front."

Asked if England had surprised a few people with their win, he replied: "Outside our changing room, but not inside it. We knew we could win."

 I love it ..
