Yastrzemski
Basically, I just run Sygate Personal Firewall on my desktop and I've got a couple laptops around the house that get onto the net through the desktop's connection routed wirelessly. What are some of the first steps in making a computer act as a firewall as opposed to using some software, like Sygate?Any good firewalling tutorials out there for these type of basic questions? Yastrzemski
Have a browse through here:- GuidesAhh, some great guides, thanks.I have a bunch of questions, though.Do I need to run anything like Sygate on my desktop if I build a firewall box? Does a firewall running on a machine enable me to disallow certain applications from accessing the internet and remote machines etc? Much in the way Sygate says, "Application X is trying to contact a remote machine at 222.222.222.222. Would you like to allow this application to access the internet?"How is something like that implemented in a firewall machine? If it isn't, what solutions are there for such a problem?I have a desktop pc with the modem connected to it, and the router coming from that modem. I have two laptops that are used throughout the house wirelessly. Right now I have Sygate on all three machines...is building a firewall from a computer a solution that will enable me to remove the firewall software from each machine? How many NIC cards will I need? One for the router to plug into and one to send data back out to the desktop? Or is it simply...Modem into firewall...firewall into router? How does one send traffic out of the machine and back into the router to allow the laptops to get on the web? Is that stuff handled by the actual firewall software installed on the old machine I'm converting?
