Well I'll have a go then...

Basically having a router is like having another firewall (good ones that is eg. Netgear) and you 'forward ports' in order for the connections to get through the router's built in firewall. The site that Alan2273 gave you is brill for the port numbers etc. for games and applications. On the site you enter the brand/ model number and it gives you a page with all the port forwarding info for lots of applications and games and tells you how to do it.

Your router should allow internet traffic automatically and you should only need to allow ports for games and some software (torrent software etc.). It's a bit daunting at first but you soon get used to it and that site really helps ! Hope this helps a little ;)
