adjusting programs in start-up

Some of my programms run in start up.

Now, is there any option to adjust which programm will run first when I restart my computer?

This is very crucial for me.

Hello hamilton; a very good and practical question indeed, as much software is written to automatically start itself every time you boot up, even though you may need it only sometimes. Examples: Nero Burner, Adope Acrobat, and so on. The result is you computer takes longer to start up and runs slower than necessary.

A word of warning before you start changing anything: do a little background reading in one of the Windows manuals written for your Operating System if possible, as mistakes can occur, (but can usually be put right).

There are a number of free utilities which will list for you all the programs that run on start up and enable you to simply stop them loading and wasting your time, but without deleting them from you computer.

One I use on my laptop is EasyCleaner from ToniArts which has a menu item called something like Startup and will list the start up programs. You just untick the boxes to stop them loading, but they remain on your system and are easily loaded when required. Just put the word EasyCleaner into a search engine to find the free downloads. Check that it's from ToniArts.

Start by making a restore point for you computer, then run EasyCleaner to find the items. EasyCleaner has some other useful tools which you can use also. Read the info on their website and read the helpfiles. EasyCleaner is a well-established, tried and tested program that doesn't take any risks with your computer. Type "EasyCleaner + Reviews" in your search engine if you want to find what others say about it.

Other people on this forum will give you some tried and tested ideas also. Never install and run a utility like this unless it's been recommended by experienced users, as there is some poorly designed stuff being advertised.

People on this Forum generally give good, well thought out advice so you can tust them.

I used to have a program that I used at one time for XP, - buggered if I can find it now, so that's not much use !!!!

Apart from going into the registry and fiddling about I would think third party software is the way to go if you must. Have look around, make some enquiries and see if anybody has come up with something for Vista yet.

Type MSCONFIG in start and search and untick the programs that you don't want to run on start up.

But be warned in Vista it will keep telling you MS Blocked programs and that gets on your nerves after a while.

There's also the excellent Start Up Inspector for Windows from www.windowsstartup.com . There's a free version and a simple consultancy service that's very easy to use.
