Joske Posted December 20, 2007 Report Share Posted December 20, 2007 Hi, My knowledge of Windows is very basis, but I have the following problem:Everytime I close my system, whether it is in sleepmode or a complete shutdown, and start it up again, the standard Windows firewall function is enabled. Has this something to do with a virus or with the previous installed virusscanner (AVG). I uninstalled this scanner, but the problem was not gone. I am desparate to solve this issues, but all I get from my support agent is: Do a system restore to the first setup or at a point where the problem did not excists. However I did state that I have only installed an anti-virus software package (AVG). So to give an anwser at the first question, no I do not have a third party firewall installed.Still the windows firewall is at startup disabled by the system, no matter whether I close and save the systemsettings at shutdown.If anyone can help me, that would be great! Except why the Windows firewall disables itself; I tried looking around, but couldn't find anything.I think what your computer is trying to tell you: better get a 3rd-party firewall. The Windows firewall is 1-way only, other firewalls protect incoming and outgoing traffic.My favorite free firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ - give it a try! I accidentally once did this and got the same result as Joske - no Windows firewall. For the life of me I can't remember how I disabled it and how I got it running again... I'm sure someone out there knows Anyway, the Windows Firewall only blocks incoming threats, not outgoing information. So if something has already got in...Comodo Free is excellent and easy to use. Sygate Free, though no longer supported is also still available, and is also very good. It also has a fascinating "trace back" facility to tell you where all those intrusion attempts originated.
