ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
It has been nearly a quarter of a century since we last visited Egypt, and not much memory was left as to the culinary offerings of that marvelous country. So when we heard of a new Egyptian restaurant opening in Meguro, we lost no time and headed there. Nefertiti Tokyo is located opposite from Tokyu Store behind Meguro JR station. The first thing to notice when entering the restaurant is plenty of golden curtains, separating all tables into individual boots. Upon being seated on the comfortable – but not too soft – sofa, we consulted the menu for drinks. Apart from beer (¥500~) and wine (¥3,800~¥7,300), there are a number of house cocktails such as Nefertiti, Alexandria, Cleopatra, Arabian Night, Sahara, and Belly Dancer (all ¥860) to start with. And once equipped with our aperitifs, we started to ponder the food menu, which comes in English and Japanese, with lots of helpful pictures. The moroheya soup looked interesting, and so did the “Cow Leg soup”. Lots of appetizers, e.g. hummus, papaganoko (eggplant and cucumber), Egyptian falafel (ground bean cakes), or spinach and lamb meat (all ¥680~¥980). There are seafood dishes such as charcoal-grilled swordfish (¥2,500), oven-baked sole filet (¥1,500), or sautéed prawns “Alexandria stile” (¥1,680). More than a page of meat dishes like shish kebob (¥1,600), charcoal-grilled minced lamb (¥1,600), roasted duck breast with ginger sauce (¥1,800), and various chicken and lamb dishes (¥1,600~¥2900). Also an interesting selection of rice preparations like kushari (rice, lentils, macaroni, with tomato sauce and caramelized onions; ¥1,050), or wara’anbi (grape leaves stuffed with rice and ground lamb; ¥1,400). Thankfully all dishes are rather small, so we were able to order a good variety of different tastes. There are also course menus at ¥3,800, ¥5,600, and ¥7,300, for those who have difficulties to make their own selections. For dessert there is a rice pudding with rose water (¥480), and other traditional Egyptian sweets (~¥700). And at the end we simply couldn’t resist a water pipe with fruit-flavored tobacco to go with our strong Egyptian coffee. We truly enjoyed ourselves in this beautifully decorated restaurant!Tel 03-5719-5455; Tokyo Mito building 2F, 2-17-4, Kamiosaki, Shinagawa-ku; www.nefertititokyo.com

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
The next time we went on a Friday, where they have a belly dancer. In the middle of her show she looked for a victim to dance with her. I was suitably drunk enough to let my friends push me on the stage What an embarrassment! I really, really, really cannot dance! Once again - the dangers of alcohol B)

Once again - the dangers of alcohol B)  At the begining of the 80's, I lived in Nigeria for a while. We had some Lebanese friends who ran a nightclub called, The Nefertiti. Naturally, they had belly dancers. I thought it was great, so the friend had his dancer teach me how to do it!!I was even given an outfit for learning to it so well. You know the kind of thing, tassels hanging from the front bits of the top. :0 Great memories! :D
