Scarthy © ® ™
You know when you "add to favourites" certain websites and they have a little icon to represent them (other than the blue "e") ? Well they are FavIcons or Favourite Icons. I make a habit of adding them to websites in my Favourite list and making them if they don't exist. I think they finish off a site and make it look professional :D

Guest ellas
tankus I think we will have to free your man in the cage as its using too much bandwidth :D
Tankus
How about a remaining weekly bandwidth counter at the top of the screen......?Make us more circumspect about our postings...............!
peter e
Thanks, Sir Radfordin :) I think I understood all that - except: What are the files that are being uploaded? Do you mean if someone pastes in a link to another site? Or may be uploads a document from their own computer for the members to view? Are we using up bandwidth by posting a topic, or adding a reply to one? Sorry to appear thick - I know a bit about computer applications etc but when it comes to stuff like this I know nothing (in case you hadn't guessed).I'm hoping to do a web site of my own (eventually) hosted by my ISP (it's free I understand but you are limited to so many Mbs). Will bandwidth affect my site? For example, if the size of the files composing my web site is under the limit stipulated by my ISP, but a lot of people access my site (some hope) am I liable to be charged because bandwidth is being used?
Guest ellas
hopefully this will be short term as we are looking at a host that offers 15GB of bandwidth compared to our current 2GB.
Sir Radfordin
You are most welcome :D The files that were being uploaded at the images that you can see as you browse the board. You may have been able to upload other files, but I didn't try - we found out you couldn't do a sound file.If someone posts a URL to an image then its not hosted at this site and so the overall size of the post is not affected by the size of the image posted. Everytime you download content on this site it uses up bandwidth. Most text postings will be tiny, thats the good thing about HTML. A good designed site, with few images will often be under a 1mb - though that will depend on the size of the site (content wise.)For most people, hosting a personal site, bandwidth isn't a problem - you don't have enough people looking at it often enough for it to matter. With a site like this though, there is lots more content, people are always adding to it, its always changing and there are loads of us doing it all the time. It all adds up.The only way to answer the questions related to your ISP would be to read the terms and conditions (small print) of the use of webspace. The limit they set is the size of the site in terms of file size. If you get 5mb then you can put 5mb worth of content up. The bandwidth limits aren't an issue there.
Tankus
So its the amount of content on the server .....not the number of times its looked at?
Sir Radfordin
So its the amount of content on the server .....not the number of times its looked at?Which amount we talking about there Tankus?Bandwidth is about content being viewed, so each time a page is sent down the line its a bit of overall bandwidth used up.Hosting space, on the server, is limited also but that only affects the actually size of the content of the site as a whole. For example if you have 20mb you could put a 20mb soundfile there and nothing else. If 5 people looked at that file it would use a total of 20mb*5 times = 100mb bandwidth.Made sense?(hope I'm still getting this right!)
