catgate Posted January 4, 2008 Report Share Posted January 4, 2008 Following the debacle of a couple of weeks ago I obtained a new PCI wireless card and have plugged it in.The installation of the hardware seems to be successful, in as much as the indications are that the W98SE box is picking up emanations from the router (or somewhere).The small piece of bog roll that is being passed off as an installation guide is as much use as a chocolate fireguard, and consequently I am soliciting assistance with the setting up of the "network" niceties.I have looked at several Googled sources and there seems to be little consistency in the information on offer. The only exception being that it is necessary to have the PCI card plugged in and the box switched on.Realtek seem to be unable or unwilling to provide a downloadable manual ( or even an undownloadable one.) I want to simply connect my W98SE box to the router via a wireless card, so that the Linux box can chew away happily via a piece of wire whilst the W98SE box does in simultaneously by radio waves. I have downloaded and printed out the words of wisdom from homecomputeraid and scuzzman and will see if I can understand it all.Don't wait up! catgate Posted January 14, 2008 Author Report Share Posted January 14, 2008 The time has come to own up to the fact that despite having read the words of wisdom from homecomputeraid and scuzzman I am just as far from achieving my objective as I was several days ago.I have installed my card in my W98SE box and it seems to be picking up signals. The Voyager 2500V is coupled to my adsl line, it is quite happily feeding my Linux machine via an ethernet cable and the wireless activation is ticked in its set up box. My problem revolves round:- 1/ do I just need radio connection from W98SE to 2500V? or 2/ do I have to make a "network" and involve my Linux box? and of course 3/ how?The above words of wisdom start off from the point of making a cable net work and then linking to a wireless router, whereas I, as far as my logic tells me, do not need a "network". I have been messing about trying to use network settings for something I obviously don't need them for.I am still left with the problem, though, of how I get W98 to connect to 2500V. Then I used the eye of a toad and wing of bat method, and by use of my intellect, well not all of it, I managed to arrange things, by means of SSID, and WEP, so that W98SE now receives internet via 2500V.
