findlay95 Posted January 24, 2008 Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 When I try to play some mpeg files on my laptop, they play fully. For example one is about 40 minutes. When I play the same file on my desktop, it shows as about 5 minutes and plays for 5 minutes; using the "go back" slider shows some other parts, but not in any order. -pops- Posted January 24, 2008 Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 Which program are you using to play these MPGs?Do you have the full codecs to play them?You can get a comprehensive set of codecs from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm Even if this is not the cause of the problem, they are be useful to have. It solved the problem but the installation procedure asks you to select a bewildering array of tick boxes for various file types and activities.I carried on installing anyway - but feel the cure was more by luck than judgement - because I cannot recall to this day what I ticked. -pops- Posted January 24, 2008 Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 I use the "standard" pack which appears third or fourth on the list of downloads which you get by clicking on the "Download K-Lite Codec Pack" on the home page.The "basic set" is just that - the essential codecs for general use. The standard pack contains most of the codecs anyone is likely to come across and the "full pack" has just about everything and is over the top for most users. The pack is FREE!Thanks, I'll try the codecs. This happens with Windows Media Player, Real Player and Quicktime on the desktop, but not on the laptop. Both have about a gig of ram.
