Lake62
I'm having a problem using system restore. It will not work. It comes back saying" cannot restore, try another time". Well, I recently did a system recovery keeping my files only a month ago. I'm using XP and downloaded everything I needed before downloading service pk2. Does anyone have any suggestions?? -pops-
I never rely on System Restore. In my experience it is very hit and miss whether it works or not - made even worse if you have more than one hard drive. You post seems to indicate that you are trying to restore to a time before you installed SP2. If that is so, it is most likely the reason it is not working because you are trying to restore what Windows see as a fundamentally different system. Not of any immediate help here but, can I strongly suggest that you make a full system backup using something like Acronis True Image? andsome
Personally, I have never had any trouble using System Restore. I have two hard drives, BUT have only ever used it on C drive, where the operating system is. I would fully agree with pops regarding a full back up using Acronis. He nagged me into it some time ago, and I have never regretted it. Have you tried running sfc /scannow to see if any files need restoring? You may find this useful. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Not quite clear what you did. Did you install SP2? You want to undo that? You can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs (check 'Display Updates').If you haven't installed SP2 yet, make 100% sure there is no malware on your system. SP2 must be installed on a clean system only, otherwise the results are unpredictable.
Dencandy
There's at least 1 other possible cause for this problem:1 - System Restore tells you there's various restore points but when you try them the utility runs, but doesn't finish and then comes up with the message you describe. This can be because your calender or clock isn't working properly and one or both of them have got out of sync. So when System Restore looks for the restore point on a certain date and time, it can't find it because the calender or clock has changed in the intervening period (it's running too fast or too slow). Check the calender and clock, are they accurate? Do you have an automatic internet time checker and is it working properly? Have you adjusted for daylight saving time? If you have a clock/calender problem you can search the Microsoft Help and Support Centre (on-line version) for ways of repairing it.Another possibility is that you have insufficient space allocated to save Restore Points. But if that was the problem you would have no Restore Points marked on the System Restore calender at all.
