CurlyWhirly Posted January 31, 2008 Report Share Posted January 31, 2008 When my PC boots up, I get this error message and don't know why Prevx CSI is configured to load automatically.Does anyone else use Prevx CSI and of so do they get this error message?I wonder if the reason why the error comes up is because Prevx CSI doesn't know what the hosts file is for and thinks it is malware of some sort?I know where the Hosts file is located (WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) and I've read the contents using Notepad and I can't see anything malicious in there?p.s. as I don't know what to select, I select 'No' in case something is accidentally deleted from the Hosts file which may damage it. AlanHo Posted January 31, 2008 Report Share Posted January 31, 2008 Out of curiosity I downloaded and installed Prevx CSI. did a scan with it, rebooted my Vista computer and did not get the warning message.I wonder if your installation is corrupt and you might benefit from uninstalling it - running CCleaner, rebooting and reinstalling it again.As an aside - I have uninstalled it because the scan found nothing - despite the fact that my only protection is Windows Defender and AVG Anti Virus free. One single line (127.0.0.1 localhost), or a zillion lines assigning URLs to 127.0.0.1 ?If it's the latter, how did you load these?The error message probably means that there is an entry in the hosts file that prevents Prevx from updating. One single line (127.0.0.1 localhost), or a zillion lines assigning URLs to 127.0.0.1 ?If it's the latter, how did you load these?It is the latter i.e. a zillion lines assigning URLs to 127.0.0.1 but I can't remember how I loaded these however checking the date ( 30/6/2006 ), I don't seem to have updated it for around 18 months and I'm wondering whether this has something to do with it?The error message probably means that there is an entry in the hosts file that prevents Prevx from updating.In that case I will turn my HOSTS file off with Hosts toggleThanks for your help.
