CPU Temperatures

As reported before I reently built a new computer with an Intel Quad core processor and Zalman cooler.

I used the thermal compound that came with the Zalman cooler. Since I built it each CPU core ran at a different temperature - core 1 being the highest and core 4 the lowest. I got core temperatures at idle in the range 36C to 42C but when running at 100% CPU load these temperatures increased to 48C to 55C.

Whilst within safe limits - a friend who knows "stuff" said this was higher than it should be and recommended I refit the cooler using Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound. This I did yesterday - the result is that core temperatures are now running at 31C to 38C at idle and 42C to 47C at 100% CPU load.

Hence the change in thermal paste has produced a drop in core temperatures of about 7C. The Arctic Silver instructions claim that the temperature will fall further over the first 200 hours "break-in" period by between 2C and 5C.

I am old and English and in need of your help for me to better understand your post.

I am not at all sure what your reference to "balls out" refers to. I appreciate it may, on a hot day, help cool my anatomy, but how it helps cool the cpu beats me..... :unsure:

I also don't understand what your abbreviation F@H stands for... :blink:

I googled for the cooler you mention and must admit it looks rather impressive - but probably overkill for me because I don't overclock my computer. I would not be able to achieve a temperature of 22C whichever cooler I fitted, because the room temperature in my study is higher than that. Thanks for your recommendation - I'm sure it's very pertinent - but I am happy with my copper coloured Zalman and my Arctic Silver compound.

Haha, sorry about that. "Balls out" is a crude phrase meaning to get the maximum performance (pedal to the metal). Basically, it just means get excellent cooling. F@H (Folding At Home) is a program that you download that uses your CPU's idle cycles (when it's not doing anything) to perform calculations for a Stanford research lab, called protein folding, and then sends the results back. As a result, if you're running F@H, your processor is always running at 100%. Hope this clears up my post :-)
