Mike567 Posted February 27, 2008 Report Share Posted February 27, 2008 UBUNTU!!!!! go back to ubuntu :lol:.It could be a number of things, I can't really remember what svchost does I think it controls the windows errors or something?but if its using a lot of CPU I would think it could be a virus or something, try running a anti virus /anti spyware. You will first have to find out which other process is using up so much resources from the svchost.Process Explorer is a tool that can show you what is using a particular svchost instance. tjwoosta Posted February 29, 2008 Author Report Share Posted February 29, 2008 I like this process explorer! i never knew there was such a toolhowever i dont understand this. i have a service host that is using 50 to 60 for cpu and there is only one process under it dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) which is only using about 2 cpuall of the other service hosts dont seem to be using much cpuis it possible that this is a side effect of trying yodm3d a few months back? it was only installed for about 2 days before i removed it because it slowed everything down too much. I have never known it to do so. SUPERAntiSpyware free is excellent, so is A Squared free. :DYou have not mentioned a Firewall, do you have one installed? ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted March 1, 2008 Report Share Posted March 1, 2008 You should not kill the svchost process, as this is not the solution, but just a temporary circumvention.If disabling AutoUpdate did not solve the problem, and process explorer does not show you what process is using svchost, then you will have to go another way.Close all applications, then open Task Manager, and kill first all user processes, one by one. Note when the svchost CPU usage stops, then you have found which process causes it. If it was not a user process, then go on by killing system processes (except svchost) the same way until you find the culprit.P.S. what is that McAfee software you have - just antivirus, or does it contain a firewall? tjwoosta Posted March 2, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 2, 2008 now i have had the updates off since my last post and my computer was working fine but when i restarted my computer the problem was back! this means this doesnt have anything to do with the updates.but sometimes when i restart it's like the process that's causing this fails to startalso earlier when i mentioned how i didn't have permission to kill it I was talking about only the problem thread not the whole svchost(when you double click the svchost in this process explorer program it shows you the properties then you click threads and it shows you all of the individual threads that are running under that specific svchost, but i dont have permission to even give myself permission to kill it) despite the fact that i am the administrator! I believe there is a fix for this somewhere.Regarding McAfee - what is the exact product that you have installed? It is important to know if it contains a firewall. McAfee was one of this first antivirus technology companies, but I don't think they are very experienced in firewalls. In fact, their whole technology is not that advanced any more. tjwoosta Posted March 2, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 2, 2008 automatic updates is off but the cpu problem came back when i restarted so i dont think it is automatic update that is causing it.and i have mcafee security center, it says nothing about a version # or anything(((UPDATE))) i just figured out how to get administrator permissions in the process explorer program (right click the icon go to properties - compatability, check run as admin), with the administrator permissions i was able to succesfully kill the problem thread (all is good, cpu went down to normal) but now i have to manually kill the thread every time i boot my computer is there a way to track down where this thread came from using its TID number?
