catgate Posted March 21, 2008 Report Share Posted March 21, 2008 Having just gone onto BT broadband I have a wireless router that is "spare" (BT supplied one and I already have one connecting my LInux box to the net). It just happens that the PCI wireless card that I had, which linked my W98SE box to the internet via the wireless router on my Linux box, suddenly appeared to go into a state of non-co-operation a while ago, and so I was pondering on utilising my "spare" wireless router as a replacement.I had hoped to just plug it in and then find a driver on the BT supplied CD, but I can not find anything that I recognise as such. (Would I recognise it if it hit me in the face?)So my plan then was to install the router as though it were going to be the master connection and then just change the SSID. The latter does not require a driver.Regarding the BT Home Hub, I have two sitting in a box doing nothing having reverted to my old Netgear DM 602 with a Netgear FS605 switch connecting via Ethernet to my main machine and a network printer then a through-the-mains link to my other two computers - I have done away with wireless completely having found it less than good compared with a wired system.BT Home Hubs are not very good products with a huge failure and fault rate - probably why they're giving them away. I was hoping to be able to get into the Router via 192.168.1.1 and set the SSID, but then just as I started to plug things together I was aware that I would have to poke about with settings in W98SE, which I imagined would require some sort of drivers.So it seemed that to install the router through the BT CD method, and then simply swap the SSID might be a lazy way round it. You may have to find out the default IP Address range for your model though. Many home routers have a 192.168.1.x, or 192.168.0.x subnet. catgate Posted March 27, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 27, 2008 Hi Catgate,It's not so much that it won't work as that it may needlessly complicate your network and make things confusing.You'd want to make sure you were connecting to the Wireless Router you thought you were connecting to, and figure out the flow of traffic.It all comes down to the fact that I had a new surplus BT Home Hub to hand and the PCI wireless card that I was using had decided to go duff, and so being a Yorkshireman I was trying to avoid spending money by using what I had to hand.As far as confusion is concerned, around these parts it is already freely available in great profusion.
