Jesper Posted March 29, 2008 Report Share Posted March 29, 2008 Hi everybody.I have a - maybe a little spookey - problem.I'm using a nautical chart program for navigation. The GPS input is normally coming into a computer on my LAN which has an oldfashined serial port (COM1).The the signal is then distributed to all computers on the network PROVIDED that the navigational program is running on the computer receiving the GPS signal.So far no sweat.But I'm buying a GPS for personal use on my laptop which has no serial port - only USB's.The best GPS's on the marked are all USB connectors, allthough some still offer serial outputs.The question is: Is it possible to "Tweak" the computer into thinking that a certain USB port is really a serial one and thereby being recognized by the navigational program as such. The Nav program only wants inputs from serials, TCP or UDP - USB is not recognized.Looking at the device manager I see that my Blootooth USB pen does excactly this. It has created about 10 "serial ports".I wonder if this is a relatively easy thing to do. The alternative is a USB to SERIAL Cable plus an adapter from the small round serial plug to the oldfashioned 9 pin plug in stead of just plugging the gps into the USB port directly.Any ideas??Best regards to allJesper Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

All I had to do was install the serial port driver, configure the GPS to use the correct port and that was it.You'll probably find that ports 1 + 2 are already allocated.
