Resize monitor display

i am planning on buying a new 24" monitor [Acer P241WD] soon

i am also planning on buying the new nVidia GT200 [which is much better than the G92] core-series, twice

for my new computer

now im running on two 7600GT's [which can handle Assasins Creed full with 2x AA, on 1280x1024], which work fine on my 19" monitor, but wont be able to run all the games on the current detaillevel on the 24" monitor

so i have a question:

is there software to change the size of the display of my monitor:

so i can display 1280x1024 on a 24" monitor, without having a very stretched screendisplay

i know there is a way to get these black bars around your screen, instead of having the display stretched

but how?

I think you may get the effect you want by choosing 'centre' under Desktop settings.

Can you not use the monitor manual menu width setting. On my monitor I can manually adjust the picture height, width, vetical position, horizontal position, colour balance etc. Reduce the width until you get the desired aspect ratio.

on my current monitor that function [changing the screen width] isnt even available! :O

but i dont think that the screen is able of changing the width so much, since the screen will be stretched very much

when i try a different [lower] resolution on this monitor[not the 24" one > i havent bought that one yet], with the advanced resolution options from nVidia CP, it doesnt work

any other ideas?

I got a 22" widescreen monitor a while ago. The bigger monitors use different resolutions to the 17/19" ones. At the moment my desktop is running @ 1680 x 1050 @60hz. I haven't heard of any such software but would be interested to find out?

I have noticed that certain games have the 1680 x 1050 resolution as well as some visualisations within media players. Other than that I have found the screens run at times with a border - NOT very nice! Even Windows boots up with borders!

Alot of the wallpaper sites now have widescreen versions of wallpapers available and as the screen sizes increase, the demand for things "widescreen" will do also. Let us know if you find any software - ;)

no, why would i do that?

i dont want to center a wallpaper

i want to display a lower resolution on my big monitor, without stretching it: so it will be displayed in 1:1 pixel ratio > black bars will appear on the side of the screen, just like i showed on the image in my first post

i just read somewhere that it might be caused by my current monitors input: VGA

this isnt digital input, so the screen might not be able to display the information like it should: with black bars on the side

i used a DVI-VGA adapter on my videocard, so my monitor will work [and it does], but maybe this is a disadvantage of the vga input... ?
