I have been visiting a musician friend out in the sticks and after 5 mins on his pc I knew there were security issues present. I removed most of them I hope but... I downloaded some updates from MS and it wouldn't install as they needed this computer to have sp2 installed. I downloaded sp2 and then the system crashed! I rang MS and spoke to a technician who got me to f8 then disable restart option and tell him the message... I then had to go to run/ msconfig and stop start up items and selective item start. Problem I think lies in zone alarm and avg... since I tried to uninstall both there are still big issues and I have had to phuc around for 2 days now trying to resolve... I have managed to sort of get it going but I am worried if I try instal SW I will be back at square one as I did try to put sun belt fire wall on after zone alarm wouldn't work and the system crashed to blue death! I also had to dl MS updates again as restored to earlier point... I have now restored a place that works but like I said, just! It is slow, real slow to shut down since all this and my friend is freaking out at me... Being Geographically disadvantaged here at my mates there is not even isdn available and the dial up connection is driving me nuts... I have wireless modem 3g on my laptop but even though I can only get a 2g tower the signal is so weak cthe connection is not possible... I am spending far too much time here chasing my tail and would appreciate some sound advice from some one in the know... I often find the best way is to back up the data and do a clean install of the OS and all programmes.Is it possible for you to take the computer back home where you can get a decent Broadband connection and do just that. It might be worth him getting one - maybe there are cheap legitimate copies on sale now that people are upgrading to Vista.EditJust had a quick look on Ebay - there are lots of genuine Windows XP Home CDs with COA for about £50. Unfortuantly there is no mail here... I am 8 1/2 hrs from home out the back of burke! Actually it is country Victoria Australia. I miss the small things you take advantage of like internet connectivity as a city slicker but gee the view is spectacular though :)... I am hoping someone local has a disc to get this thing sorted if that is the way to go... heres a snippet of the microsoft techs email to show I am not trying to just dick people around with pirated crap... ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted April 18, 2008 Report Share Posted April 18, 2008 Before installing a Windows service pack it is essential that two criteria are metTkae a full backup of the systemMake 100% sure that the system is free of malwareKeep this in mind for the upcoming SP3.What I would do in your current situation isClean up unnecessary files (CCleaner)Clean up unnecessary startup programs (Startup Inspector)Defragment the HDP.S. in CCleaner, stay away from the registry cleaning part; just do the disk cleaning. I have run house call and it found another trojan, hopefully it really removed it? it said there was a vunerability with ms01-028, anyone know what this is???I can't install any anti virus and avg is still in the add remove programs!!!! and won't reinstall, does anyone have a way to remove these from the list???If I hadn't had system restore on in the last couple of days I would be screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
