Internet Explorer startup problems

Recommended Posts

All has worked well since I had the computer... years now and through several upgrades. I use XP pro, SP 2. Suddenly I found that when I clicked on the Internet Explorer icon in desktop, nothing happend for a while then the basic page loaded up ( I have google as the front page) but nothing would respond. After about a minute and a half it sprung into life and all worked properly. The same thing happened in Outlook Express when I had an e-mail with a link . As soon as I clicked the link within the e-mail everything froze but if i waited long enough... at least a minute and a half .. the link worked. Sometimes I simply had to close OE down (cntrl/alt/delete then terminate OE) .

I have tried everything I can think of from full virus/spyware scans (spybot and CA antivirus); I have defragmented and cleaned C drive; I have cleaned the registry etc and still this persists. (I go back and check periodically)

In desparation a while back I downloaded and installed Firefox and Thunderbird and they work faultlessly. Now that I have found this forum I wonder if anyone can "diagnose" the problem from what I have said and offer a cure as in many ways I would like to return to the MS progs. It seems to me that Internet Explorer has developed a problem and I do not know how to clear it.

Ironically, my wife has a computer but with Win 2000 pro and that has developed the same fault. I have now installed Firefox on her computer and it has solved the problem. As we share nothing between the computers and even have totally different ISPs and broadband connections (different phone lines) I can see no way of cross contamination.

Any ideas??

Is this IE6 or IE7? If IE6 upgrade to IE7. If IE7, many people have found IE7 problems reslved by uninstalling it, then downloading a new copy and installing that one. When you install it try physically disconnecting your internet connection, and dissabling your firewall and AV programme during the installation. Connect/enable again once the settings screen, etc appears. :flowers:
