Windows updates

I re-loaded Windows XP the other day. Now, I keep getting told to install updates, but when I try to do this I am told it cannot be done. There is a screen dump of the error message attached. There are loads of updates it cannot install.

Also, it could be co-incidence, but starting at around the same time, I can now hear that the central processor is "busy" with something a lot. This tends to slow my machine down. If I go CTRL ALT DEL and click on Performance, I can see the CPU Usage is up and down all the time even when I have no applications open. It is really wierd and disconcerting. Like it's doing something I don't know about and am not in control of.

I don't know if the two problems are linked, but does anyone have any bright ideas about what I should do?

1. You have to give us the error number that prevents the updates from installing. Click on 'Review your update history', then click on the red icon to see the error numbers.
   
2. Use the Processes tab on the Task Manager to see what's using your CPU.

Thanks for responding Pat. Where do I find the "Review your update history"? (sorry - I'm a computer thickie)

In the Processes in the Task Manager, something called Update.exe keeps coming in and out - but it appears at different positions in the list (there are lots of other processes listed but they stay constant - only the Update.exe seems to be really active).

The option to "Review your update history" shows on the Windows Update site after you have downloaded/installled updates/fixes (or not !).

On Internet Explorer open http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and it should show you a panel like this

P.S. the Update.exe may have to do something with your failed updates. We may even be able to take care of both problems with one fix.

Thanks Irene. Tried all of these fixes. Yellow Update warning icon has vanished, but I did not see Updates being installed...

After trying again with the internet Windows Updates, it quotes this one failed update:

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

It would seem that this one is the key to installing the others?

Try to run WGA from here http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ (click on Validate Windows, then follow the instructions).

Thanks Pat. I was able to install WGA. But the other updates still don't install. Any more ideas? Thanks.

I feel at my wits end. I spent ages downloading the new Windows SP 3 this evening, only to be told at the end that it had failed. I went into Review Your Update History and it says i haven't yet tried to install any updates! Despite trying for many days now! So I cannot find an error code, after all that.

These are the results - hugely disappointing. I am not making any progress at all with this!

I would first try to install the "remaining" updates, by double-clicking on the yellow shield in your systray. Do no yet try to install SP3!

Follow these instructions before starting to install SP3. Obviously, if you do it via Microsoft Update, you cannot disconnect from the Internet.

As you probably gathered from the silence, I gave up, turned off the auto update, and tried not to worry about it for 4 weeks or so.

Feeling concientious I tried installing updates again tonight and was given a list of loads and loads of updates it said it had not installed. The three error codes I have are:

0x80246008

0x8007F0DA

0x80080008

Does anyone have any more ideas (I tried all the fixes listed on the windows update site, unsuccessfully)
