Weird External Hard Disk

Recommended Posts

I just bought an external hard disk yesterday. But, I have a problem in my PC.

The problem is:

1.Sometimes it is not detected or Took a very long time to be detected.

2.If it is detected, sometimes it is

a.Disconnected when copying a file and connected again.

or

b.Constantly changing between disconnected and connected. Even viewing what inside the external hard disk automatically disconnected.

When I'm running a CHKDSK on it, it shows a file that is completely unreadable, but in my laptop it doesn't show that file or any file that completely unreadable.

This problem doesn't happen at all in my laptop.

What should I do? Please help.

When I bought my Western Digital plug in hard drive I first had to format it to NTFS, as it was supplied as fat 32. Is there no manual with it? Recently I tried it in a different USB port and had similar problems to you. I have two banks of four USB ports, and only one bank will recognise a powered plug in device. If it has been formatted to NTFS, try it in another port. The important thing to remember with these devices is DO NOT unplug the device when it is on without first clicking on the small hardware icon bottom right hand corner of the screen, and selecting to STOP the drive, only then do you unplug it. :D

I'm using Windows XP SP2. Now my external hard disk won't detected at all. I'm using the same USB port that could recognize it yesterday and this afternoon. I had a problem that my external hard disk automatically disconnect yesterday and this afternoon too.

Btw,it is night in my country right now.

This problem happening this night and now it's getting worse. I just bought it yesterday.

I just tested it in my laptop about 1 hours ago and it worked fine (my laptop OS is same as my PC). After testing in my laptop, I try plug it into my PC but it won't detected at all.

Any solutions/suggestions?

If it works on the lap top but not the computer, it looks very much as though you have a problem with the P.C. Try plugging in and switching on the drive, then right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE, then left click on Disk management, and see if it is showing in there. :D
