JDS Posted June 12, 2008 Report Share Posted June 12, 2008 Just wondered if anyone could give me some direction. I’m not overly computer savvy so please treat me as mentally challenged, lol. I have done a ton of research on my problem already but can’t quite seem to get an answer to my specific problem (or one that I can understand). So here’s what’s happened so far. I was running a “System Mechanic” “PC Repair Wizard” to supposedly repair hard drive problems. Yes, I know now after some research that Iolo products are horrible and will never use it again. Anyway, I checked the little box that said “full surface scan, may take several hours”. I come back to a blue screen with what I know now to be a Windows check disc cycle. I left it for two days, just keeps repeating. If I utilize the “press any key to stop” it stops but I’m left on the blue screen with no options but a shut down. I payed for the Windows phone tech support and this is where we are now. Booting from any of the three safe modes ends up hanging on agp440 sys. Can get into recovery console by booting from OEM disk (not the one that came with the computer) and tried “dskchk/p” & “dskchk/r”. It said it repaired the drive but when I booted it normally, went right back into “chkdsk” cycle. We disabled “agp440” but STILL hangs on it, so no safe mode options. Windows tech says there is a conflict with the chipset or something? They told me there is nothing they can do and to find a data recovery specialist. WTF!This is what I don’t understand. My computer is as up to date and clean as I think it can possibly be. Has worked flawlessly for three years. I check a little box on a “System Mechanic” option and now my whole computer is destroyed??? How can that be? Iolo of course won’t return my e-mails too. Not surprising now that I know there reputation. The computer was built by a friend of mine that unfortunately I can’t get a hold of. It’s an Intel P4 2.8 ghz 800 mhz FSB IMB cache, Abit AS8 1865 PE motherboard, 512MB 3200 2X256, Western Dig. 160GB 8MB cache HD, Gainward G-Force 5200 128 MB videocard. Running XP home SP2. This computer was only a temporary until I had the $ to build a better one, so I’m not opposed to starting over, just want my data off it without taking it to some expensive data recovery guy who might stumble across nudes of the wife, lol. Didn’t back anything up recently. I KNOW, YOU DON”T HAVE TO TELL ME! Will never happen again, trust me. Just like using Iolo products! The problem is, i've already disabled agp440 and it's STILL hanging. I guess now that i've got my head around it a little, my real questions are: (1) If agp440 is disabled and STILL hangs is there any way to get around that to get into safe mode? Can that be erased without detrimental effects? Again, i don't care about the computer hardware or it running right again, just want my data off it. I'll get a new one. Also, i understand Windows is saying there is an incompatibility issue if "agp" hangs, but the computer has worked fine for years. What would cause the sudden incompatibility just from running "CHKDSK"? (2) I do have my laptop or can get an external HD. I read a little about a possible Linux program that might bring up the data to transfer it? Just wondering if that will work without any Safe Modes working? Just from recovery console.(3) I did read about changing the "code" after the CHKDSK command? Something about changing the "1" after the CHKDSK to a "0"(or vice versa) and this will stop the cycle? Just wondering if that (or anything) can be done from the recovery console which still works.This still blows my mind that this could even happen from running CHKDSK? What happened? Sucks because i try my best to keep my computer clean and running right and i have friends that constantly download porn, music, stupid videos, etc., NO updates, NO maintenance and their computer is still running. I have an aquaintance that got his computer "cleaned out" because "it was a little slow". It had over 200 viruses, worms, Trojans etc. Why is MINE dead? They all hang up on agp440, or "mup"?Puppy Linux is the program i saw. Thank you for reminding me of the name. So, it will still read all my data even though no safe modes work and there is damage? Does that include pictures & video? If that's the case, i'm cool with that! I'll do some research on it.What is "mup"? How does it relate to agp440? How does it get destroyed or what do you think happened exactly? Although i have very limited knowledge of computers i am VERY eager to learn.
