I recently bought an XPS M1710 for home. My IT skill is zilch, so I (probably stupidly) loaded the Virgin antivirus stuff when I connected via a Netgear wireless router. I would like to know if the Windows defender does what the Virgin stuff does and if it does, should I remove the Virgin stuff.

Your Virgin stuff is anti virus

Windows defender is to guard against trojans and malware - it is not anti virus.

You need both.

I know of only a couple of people on here who use Windows defender. It NEVER finds Malware that other Anti Malware programs find. :D

I have used just AVG anti virus and Windows Defender for nearly two years and have yet to be infected by malware. Scans with other recommended anti malware programmes usually draw a blank - other that the occasional harmless tracking cookie.

Hence my conclusion is that Windows Defender does a good job of preventing malware getting onto your computer.
