Boris
If you take my advice, you will not try this - you may not be able to get working Windows 98 drivers for the motherboard of your laptop !e.g. nVidia chipsets released in the last couple of years only support Windows 2000 onwards. Windows 98 also has no support for modern multi-core processors. You may not be able to get your graphics to work either.
andsome
I have no experience of Vista, but would NEVER return to W 98. XP is the best to date. :D

The odds of being able to do so are very remote.98 will also puke on having too much memory in the machine. My memory is that you can't install with 2gb but it's been long enough since I hit it I don't recall all the details.
Scarecrow Man
512 is too much.http://support.microsoft.com/KB/253912As for the "downgrade" It's best to remove Vista and install a fresh copy of Windows 98. If you do not want to pay for XP, you should consider Linux
