I updated Windows SP3 yesterday but then could not connect to the internet or send/receive emails. I did a system restore and all was ok. I tried again to day but the problem was the same and I had to do system restore to be able to connect. Has anyone else had this problem and did they manage to sort it.

Just the basic Windows - no Zonealarm or anything like that

I haven't had this problem myself, but you could try this: go to Control Panel > Internet Connections and disable your internet connection. Shut down & re-start, then set up an internet connection to your ISP as if for the first time. The reason for this is that your internet coennection was originally set up before you installed SP3 & there may be some old settings blocking your connection.

If this doesn't work try Microsoft Help & Support (http://support.microsoft.com/). Type in something like "SP3 problems internet" & browse the results.

You could also type those words in a search engine & see what you get.

Thanks Dencandy - as it's so long since I set up the connection with my ISP - and they actually talked me through it - I can't remember how to do it! I have tried Microsoft support and they have emailed me long and seemingly complicated instructions involving disconnecting all hardware etc and although I am normally a confident computer user I really don't feel happy doing this! They also say that if the problem still exists - to email them again - but if the problem is there - well I can't do this either! I have tried telephoning their helpline but right on the last selection option the line always goes dead! Is the SP3 update really crucial from a security point of view, as I am managing very well without it at the moment. I have googled the problem but with no success so far. Can't believe I am the only one!

Hi again - I have now done another google search and have found a few forums with people reporting the same problem - but there were no real solutions so far.

Right now all crucial Microsoft updates require SP2, but eventually this requirement will be SP3, so you will need it some day.

Thanks! I have copied the instructions and will have a go today - but as I run AVG8 free edition , I can't see any option to 'disable' it so presume this means I will have to uninstall and reinstall?

No, I do not recommend to uninstall your antivirus software. If it cannot be temporarily disabled, then try to SP3 upgrade with AVG enabled.

Anyone here have AVG8? Is there really no way to temporarily disable on-access scanning?

Thanks Boris - but the only options when I right click are Open,Update, exit. I have looked all round the AVG controls and nowhere can I find a 'disable' option.

Rosie34, please see my reply on the main installing SP3 thread. To temporarily disable AVG, right clicking on the icon in the system tray (Desktop, bottom right) & select Exit or Quit.

You can keep your anti-virus running while you actually download SP3, and switch it off (and disconnect from the internet) only when it comes to the install stage. Don't worry if it interrupts the install, it will start again.

There's several items at MS Help & Support on re-establisjing your internet connection after installing SP3 if you type in "XP SP3 internet problems" in the search box.

Thanks . That answers the AV problem! I do have some instructions from MS support am waiting for some clarification as they say to unplug all hardware - and if this means the mouse/keyboard then I'm a bit snookered when it comes to doint the install! Do I really need to unplug all hardware and do a clean boot etc? Also, I've been through the pre install checklist and the only thing I haven't done is the back-up of the C-drive. I understand that Acronis is a back up programme but I have read so many conflicting reviews - I am a bit wary of it. Any other suggestins?

Yes, you certainly don't have to unplug your mouse and keyboard. You wouldn't be able to run the update at all.

Yes, it means items like printers, fax machines, external hard drives, etc. Anything non-essential to run the computer should be temporarily unplugged. :)

Just to update you and all the other people who advised me on this one. I have been in touch with Microsoft several times and they advised that the problem could be that me Edimax router required a firmware update. I was then in touch with Edimax to check how to download this update and was advised not to update wirelessly but to connect the ether cable. When I checked with the techie who installed the router, he advised that I should not download the firmware at all as this would only make things even worse and mess up the router! He also said not to even try to update to SP3! So, there you are - back to square one!

But thank you all for you help and suggestions - I really do appreciate it!

Incidentally, I did a CCleaner run at one time and this caused an error message for AVG every time when I booted up - some sort of kernel error. So I did a system restore and uninstalled CCleaner and all was ok!

I will give this a try as I have been having difficult updating as well.
