Need to Delete Windows Directory

Hello,

I have windows XP home that freezes at the opening page, basically what i want to do is delete the windows directory from a boot disk and then reinstall my OS, I can't just install it because it tries to put a second os on the drive and i don't want to format the whole drive as i have a lot of stuff on there, I made a dos bootable cd but because the c: drive is NTFS i get an invalid drive message when i try to access it, does anybody know of a bootable cd which will read the drive properly and let me delete the windows directory, also i have no floppy drive so thats out....

I think a repair is what you need, this is a link on how to do a repair from Simplyguides at the top of this page http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_...lation_xp.shtml, this should leave all your data intact but it would be wise to back up the things you cant do without.

Thanks for the Info Ronq but i only get an option to repair with the dos console also i have other big errors in windows that is why i want to delete the windows directory and do a fresh install, Thanks anyway

You could try a live Linux CD such as Knoppix, Ubuntu etc

Hi Catgate, i have a backtrack live cd at home could i delete the folder with that do you think, i have never used the Linux Gui , is it easy to use ?

I agree about the LIVE CD, I prefer UBCD4Win, or ultimate boot cd for windows. It makes a complete, working copy of Windows XP that runs from a CD. It has tons of utilities, and is great for making all sorts of repairs and removing spyware/viruses

If you do not want to loose any files I recommend using a boot CD such as Knoppix or Ubuntu and copying all your important data off that hard drive onto another store medium like a CD or even a secondary hard drive. Then format and install Windows as you would normally. Just deleting the Windows folder will only make matters worse in the long run.

Ok thanks fellas, somebody has just told me about winternal administrators pack bootable cd, does anyone have any knoledge of this

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx - I've never heard of an Administrators Pack bootable CD. Sysinternals is now a part of Microsoft, having acquired it from Mark Russinovich
