Windows/Microsoft messenger

Having found some problems with daughter's desktop accessing the internet due to one or both messengers being corrupted, I think, I'd like to re-do their instllation. G'daughter uses the desktop most particularly for communicating with her friends. I want to change things so that she can boot up then connect to the internet and only then fire up the messenger. So if anything goes wrong in future we can quickly find out what's causing it and do the appropriate repairs. The OS is XP home SP2 - will change it to SP3 after I've done a lot of repairs. Going round there now to put antivirus packages onto the desktop and the laptop. So any replies I'll pick up from there.

Thanks Boris. Was round playing with their PC's when I spotted your reply. However I had run into a bigger problem so will follow up with your recommendation when I get the other issue resolved. It's a Symantec problem. It had expired on the desktop so I tried to install AVG free and it wouldn't. Immediately thought of Andsome and his reports. Sure enough, Add/Remove wasn't complete. Tried removing the residues using the search engine and again not complete. So wll have to start with a fresh thread for any help going. Although the Symantec on the laptop is still up to-date it wont be son. Because of all the previous issues daughter had been in touch with Belkin who finally advised disabling the Symantec. As soon as I re-enabled it the connection froze. So I've disabled it again and now both P/C's will be running unprotected!

Thanks Boris. Been doing some browsing and found some links t the Symantec site for removal, but they need the actual version. version. I've already destroyed the one n the desktop. Haven't touched the one on the laptop yet, so there's hope that one will go smoothly. Will tackle the desktop one first using your link.

Sorry for the missing characters. Had decided to clean my keyboard as a couple of keys were sticking. May have scrubbed a bit too hard and lost a couple of keys. Just re-assembled and all seems well now. You can be too clean!

That was a superb link Boris. Just got back from running it on daughter's desktop, then installed AVG 8 free. All went like a dream - found 1 trojan and 6 items of malware. Then started doing a general check and house clean appalling. Only 6GB free out of 68GB available. So did a bit of arm twisting and deleted a further 20GB of files. Left with the PC doing a defrag with strict instructions as to routines and disciplines. Thursday when youngest G'daughter is dropped off for the day will carry out the same routine with her laptop, which she uses mostly while No.1 G'daughter uses the desktop.

Again many thanks :drinks:
