winchendon Posted September 14, 2008 Report Share Posted September 14, 2008 my parents have xp home edition that has so many issues. it would be easier for me to back up all their files, wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the OS. i only have a copy of the xp pro cd. so my question is can i install my version of xp pro on their computer and use their serial number from their xp home to activate it? y2khardtop Posted September 15, 2008 Report Share Posted September 15, 2008 another issue, if your serial is for an OEM install, then it probably won't work with an upgrade CD. I've been bitten by this a few times doing reinstalls on computers with OEM license but no recovery discs. I have an OEM SP1 disc, but it's a pain to then install sp2, sp3 just to get up to date. andsome Posted September 15, 2008 Report Share Posted September 15, 2008 I get really annoyed at manufactures supplying computers without an full installation disc. I am shortly to have a friend build me a new computer and I have already bought a Windows XP Home SP3 installation disc.
