Saving energy - Hibernate or not

The only options that I use on my XP Pro m/c is to either switch user or straight shut down. I've noted that there appears to be an option to send it into Hibernate mode. My understanding is that this issue saves the current active installation to disk so on Wake Up this is re-loaded back into RAM and avoids the time delay of booting from scratch. I have seen reports of problems due to failure to re-boot. Is this still a vulnerability or just hearsay? At present for energy saving I have all the peripherals connected to a special socket with the PC plugged into a particular outlet. Consequently when I go into shut down the computer powers down and after a few seconds all the peripherals are switched off. To re-start I just press the power on button on the desktop case and then everything powers up from scratch. I presume that the PC in the off mode is still drawing a small amount of power because the Optical mouse is still lit up. At night I still switch the whole thing off at a master switch.

Question is this hibernate option viable because it seems like a good idea. especially in my case where I usually have the PC on for long periods of time during the day to avoid the prolonged boot times? I don't use it when I'm asleep!

Activated it last night - after a good back-up. of course. Fist trial resulted in a completely restored system in 55 secs, bypassing the log on screen - there are 3 users but only I normally use it. One minor issue was was that my Router took a while to connect. This is a current issue with my ISP. Might be able to circumvent this by re-arranging the power connections, but that is a minor problem. All in all an improvement in time - provided this one swallow is making a summer!

Everything is plugged into one wall switch, and this is always switched off at night and at other times when my computer is not going to be used for a while. When I switch on, only the cable modem, monitor and computer are powered. All the other items such as scanner, printer, USB plug in hard drives stay completely off all the time, and are only turned on when I operate their individual switches. They all power up so quickly that there is no point in having them on when only the modem, computer and monitor are in use. When I switch on from cold the computer boots up in about one minute and forty seconds. Hardly worth worrying about. I never use hibernate. The monitor automatically switches off after ten minutes of not being used. :D

i use hibernate on my lappy most of the time, when i fold the screen down it goes into hibernate mode, i can leave all my windows, open and when i open the screen again it just all kicks in back to the same state i left it within a minute, very handy in my eyes!

Only time i shut it down is when i want to leave the house as when you open it at another destination you may get issues with connecting to routers and such.
