Hb_Kai
I recently borrowed a laptop off a local trust which is supposed to help with my college course and I've tried to connect to the people I live with's wireless but it doesn't work. I put in their password but all it is doing is requiring the network key.I can get on using the LAN, but that's about all and I need to do alot of work in my room and can't much in the front room 'cause the wire's too short and trips people up, so I kinda need to figure out how to do it quite soon..Anyone know anything? :(
catgate
Simple. Ask them for the SSID and the encryption key.
Hb_Kai
Tried that and it didn't work. We went through the new connection set up wizard, searching the local wireless connections - trying the password.Nothing's working.
catgate
Try a different card in your laptop. Is it possible the router is not set up for wireless and is just running one computer via an ethernet connection.
Sunray
Is MAC address filtering for Wifi enabled on the router? If so, you may have to add the laptop wireless adaptor's MAC address to the approved list on the router before you can connect.
Hb_Kai
No, the two people I lodge with use their router for their wireless laptop internet. How do I add the MAC address?
Vino Rosso
Another couple of things to check are:- the encryption. If it's WEP, check whether 64-bit or 128-bit is being used.- whether the router is using b/g or pre-n and that the laptop is set the same. You may find that the laptop's wireless adaptor is not compatible with the router. For example, I had a Vaio working fine with a Netgear router but an HP laptop wouldn't work. The user had to buy a Netgear wireless USB adaptor and switch off the laptop's own wireless connection to get the HP to connect to the router. Hb_Kai
Oh.I know it's using WEP but I don't know the bits.I know though that Roy (one of the lodging provider's) had the same problem getting his wireless working with this router. Now everytime I go to view the wireless connections that are in reach with this card and it keeps saying ;"Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that one"But I haven't installed anything. :SBut the two little computers icon in the corner of the taskbar near the time is still saying "Acquiring network address"
Hb_Kai
I've sorted it now. :DRealised I'm using Broadcom something or other to handle the internet connections and I just installed the BT stuff so it works properly. :DThanks for helping though. Hb_Kai
Was wondering why I never had a reply to this. I haven't still sorted the Internet connection out, that was only the software that was managing the connections.Anyway, I today found out I'm not using WEP nor WPA encryption, it's using TKIP. Never heard of it. :(Still can't access it, still have to use the wires. Not the same as wireless! :(Anywho, apparently it took Roy and Tina some time to get it working. I've tried using the Broadcom software, the BT Internet software(from my mum's), and every other way I know of.
Boris
TKIP was designed as a successor to WEP that could be implemented without replacing legacy hardwarehttps://edge.arubanetworks.com/article/wire...tkip-encryption
Hb_Kai
So it's harder to crack which I'm not trying to crack the encryption on the wireless connection anyway. I don't get it though. How come it isn't working? Is there an option on one of their computers which is saying "Not to allow any other users to access the network"? Vino Rosso
In a sense, it's fairly straight forward...1) Presuming the SSID is broadcasted, your computer 'sees' the network or it doesn't. If it doesn't, you need to switch off your computer's built-in wireless and buy a USB wireless adaptor that matches the make of the router.2) If your computer 'sees' the network, you have to set up the computer's wireless profile to match the router - WEP (64/128), WPA (TKIP/AES), etc. and, of course, the matching key.3) The final option is whether the router is locked down and will only accept by MAC in which case you need to add your computer's MAC to the router's table. It is only the router that dictates access, not the other computers. Hb_Kai
:D Thanks. So I would do that via Network Connections>"Wireless Connection">Properties?
