Install XP 64-bit - Can't boot up properly... attached is screensh

Hello

Installed Windows XP 64-bit (I think SP2). Started the installation process (chose full format, not quick format). Left for a while. Came back, and was given this;

Please tell me how I can make my computer boot up.

PS: Yes, I have tried rebooting. More than once.

Update

Now I've been having a little BIOS trouble?

Well I'll try and update the BIOS... arghh! Can't. Well I'll see if it will boot up this time around.

Ah, good, seems to be booting properly into ubuntu (8.10) now.

I'll put the ROM file on one (or all) of my partitions. Then I'll update that way.

PS: Still need this XP 64-bit issue fixed up!

EDIT: Wasn't able to boot into Ubuntu. Now trying with Kubuntu (8.04) LiveCD.

No it isn't.

A computer is a tool to make the achievement of other tasks easier. It is not an entity in itself.

I can't imagine any of your clients having multi-boot systems in the way you are envisaging so you are merely introducing non-existent problems for yourself.

If you want to experience different systems on a solitary machine the best and easiest way is to have each on a separate (swappable) hard drive - as I've suggested previously.

Also, I think that if I mess around for long enough, I will experience all problems my clients may have!

And if I learn how to fix all these... then perfect!

If you're learning for the benefit of future clients then the best way to do this is imitate what they are likely to have. For most people this does not include VMWare or virtual machines of any type, it will be a plain, straightforward Windows (or Linux or whatever). This is why I'm suggesting you have a machine as close as possible to one that others might have.

VMware is one way of having multiple (virtual) systems on one computer. However, an operating system installed on VMware does not exactly behave the same way as a natively installed system. While you can get the "look and feel" of a system under VMware, you cannot do the same things as on a native system.

Multi-boot systems are different in that respect. They are "almost" native systems, but - as this thread proves - there are different problems.

I would be happy to see you succeed with your 9-boot system, but I think you will be much on your own, as I don't know anybody who has attempted to do that before. (The max. I have ever done was a 3-boot system, and that definitely did not include Vista.)

How are multi-boot systems only almost native? Wouldn't they be native?

Unless you mean that they are not written in a native language, such as binary, hex or to go a level above, Assembly. (eg MenuetOS)

I remember seeing an article a while ago about someone doing more than 30 OSs (mostly linux).

I will do my best to plan out everything before hand (eg making a mockup of my partitions scheme... as I've already done. Still to do is writing the entire menu.lst for GRUB. Before starting!)

Maybe my choice of the word "native" was not very clear - what is the antonym of "virtual"?

What I meant is, as opposed to a virtual OS installation, as on VMware or Virtual PC, a direct installation of 1 OS on 1 computer.

Multiboot system OSes are "almost" direct installation, but - well - just "almost". They use a boot manager that may do all kinds of things before the OS actually boots. It may hide other partitions, change the current drive character, etc. So it is not *exactly* the same as a 1:1 installation.

No, that's not what I meant. It doesn't matter how an OS is written; at the end it is only executing machine instructions, however they were generated.
