Firstly a virus attack knocked out my internet link as my ports were blocked. Internet explorer just would not work. After seeking advice from a friend i was given a Windows XP 2005 edition (older than what i was previously using) and installed it as a repair.Now i have the internet link back but unlike previously enjoying fast broadband through IE7 i now have to go through the AOL 9.0 VR system and it is massively slow and prone to freezing.The question i ask is where do i go from here? Do i, can i install the newer version of XP in future?, im i stuck surfing through AOL?, or is there any other advice anyone else can suggest?Thanks in advance for any help/tips as this would be most appreciated! Luis 2012 Posted November 22, 2008 Report Share Posted November 22, 2008 I'm guessing you're using Dial-up broadband and that's why you HAVE to go through AOL and why none of the other browsers work. If you are then all you have to do is to tell IE to dial the Dial-up #/ Start IE and go to Tools-Internet Options-Connections- and click on Add. Chose Dialup or something like that and then it should ask you for the telephone number. after your done you should be able to use Just IE to browse without using AOL. If your not then you can just keep messing with the connection settings on it so that it can connect to your Broadband/ethernet port Also if you have DSL than make sure the modem is connected right then in the internet options select LAN settings and try different things Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well to answer the other question yes you probably can update to another Windows. About the internet Try Opera at http://opera.com or Safari at http://www.apple.com/safari. Can you ping websites? Go to Start>Run and type "cmd" then type "ping www.myspace.com" and tell me what u get. Anyway i'm not a wi-fi expert so i'm not realy sure how to fix this. I'll be on google looking it up..... also on firefox try to change the connection settings to Automatic. One last thing i just remembered but might now work with Wi-fi,,, have you tried booting into Safe Mode and seeing if you can get IE to start, or logging in into a different account? Anyway just to make sure try running Spybot Search and Destroy or any other security software you might have (AVG 8.0?) Anyways see if anything comes up in the scans. I think it would probably be the encryption the wireless is using or you have problems with Internet Explorer. But try and search as soon as you can because if it's a worm then it can also mess up your Windows Explorer because IE and WE are used together and one can mess up the other.Actually, if S&D or whatever scanners you have used didn't find anything you could try uninstalling IE and then install it again, IE might be corrupt somehow like an error if you've shut down the machine too quickly or some scripts downloaded on your PC via pop-ups or something.If none of this works, I'm totally stumped.
