Microsoft To Replace One Care

Microsoft are to discontinue their One Care security product from 30th June 2009. You can read their announcement HERE. One Care has never included a real-time anti-virus product and normally has to be paid for (but is often available at steep discounts). Its replacement however (code named Morro) will be a genuine anti-virus application, presumably with all that that entails in terms of updates, etc. Moreover it will be totally free, but I imagine only for those with genuine MS software.

You can read what ESET have to say about it AT THIS SITE.

Since there are still large numbers of people who don't practise safe surfing with an anti-virus product, this seems to be good news for everyone, since, if taken up, it should further restrict the spread of viruses generally.

Adding to available options is always a good thing, but considering the current wealth of options available as freebies, I'm not sure it'll be that significant unless they tie it in someway with security centre and the update system. Giving those unprotected surfers a heads up and a download link.

List of current AV freebies with live cover :- avast!, AVG, Antivir, PCTools, Comodo & Rising.

Free scanners :- ClamWin & Bitdefender
