doug Posted December 2, 2008 Report Share Posted December 2, 2008 Been doing a lot of tidying up and effectively moved my house by ~1/4 miles closer to the telephone exchange - no but have moved the router to the master phone socket and run a 20m Ethernet cable from the router to the PC. This has reduced my line attenuation from 47/48 dB to a solid 46 dB which looks like a slightly shorter line to the exchange. I now want to tidy up the wiring around the master 'phone socket. The problem is the DECT radio phone base. It's connected to the phones socket with a black phone lead and results in an untidy blackbirds nest. I want to get a 1 m white one so I can get a tidy cable run but I don't know what to look for. Where the cable goes into the phone base the plug looks like an ADSL plug but peering the this plug there's only 2 wires being used as I look into the 4 wire plug - a green one on pin one and a red one on pin 4. Although an ADSL plug fits this socket the wiring is different. The other end is a normal flat plug. Been browsing various places e.g. Maplins but am confused. Any help folks.Not sure if I can handle the Christmas wallpaper. Will have to go and see where I can it back the default Forum paper. catgate Posted December 2, 2008 Report Share Posted December 2, 2008 The 2 wire/4 wire is a bit of a confusing business. As far as the 'phone is concerned you only have two coming into the house from the top of the pole and into your first BT connector box.The cable out of that box is a "two pair" cable, One pair continuing from the incoming pair as "feed" and "return" and just one of the other pair is connected to the "feed" (the other in the pair is surplus to requirements). The purpose of this odd wire is to connect feed to a capacitor which rings the bell/buzzer and which is disconnected when you lift the receiver, leaving the other two do do the work.As far as the rest is concerned I think it is just a case of using "polarised" plugs and sockets that are not interchangeable in use, so that the electrons get to the correct destination, going "down" on the down wire and coming "up" on the up wire. Anyway out of desperation I Googled the name of my phone set and finished up with the BT shop and finished up ordering a 1 m line cord white for £2.03, free delivery.
