Driver Max

Following the successful resolution of my earlier post now trying my luck again.

I recently installed Driver Max.After checking for updates and probably because my system is a few years old quite a long list of updates came up.

Most of the updates have now been installed and my computer is running very well.

One small problem in Device Manager against other devices,Unibrain 1394 PC there are now two yellow question marks which were not there previously.

I ran the update check again and Driver Max shows this device Unibrain 1394 as being up to date so I am a bit confused.

Not sure what to do leave it alone or perhaps use the roll back to previous drivers option.

I never update drivers unless there is a VERY pressing need to do so.

Are you certain this is real? Do you have a Unibrain whatever installed? Seems to be something connected with Firewire.

I have seen so many machines wrecked by users thinking that they have to get every update and "improvement" to their driver sets.

Good use for the cliché "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I'd chuck this Drivermax out if I were you.

My first post on this forum sometime ago now was answered by your self.On that occasion Your excellent advice quickly resolved my problem.

So once again I am taking your advice and have now completely removed the Driver Max program from my system.

You mentioned that Unibrain was a Firewire related item anyway according to my computer handbook/instructions there isn't a firewire card connected to my computer.

Hopefully if in the future if I install a Firewire card the driver problem will perhaps sort itself out.

I never update drivers unless there is a VERY pressing need to do so.

I tend to follow this rule also, the only exception being driver updates to the chipset. Windows Updates always checks for driver updates that Microsoft considers essential for your system. They are listed under Optional Opdates. I think they do a good job with this & they only recommend driver updates that are necessary and have been tested by them. I think MS sometimes do more thorough testing on other products than they do on their own ones! :D

But that will of course not fix the yellow exclamation marks on your driver(s). If you open the driver(s) in question, you can see what the actual error is that caused the device(s) not to function properly. Can you give us the error number, and the details about the driver(s)?

There is also an option to roll back to the previous driver version.

P.S. I always keep my device drivers up-to-date; I couldn't bear to touch my computer if it had old, stale device drivers installed B)

I should clarify something about DiverMax. It is a great tool to find updates for installed device drivers, but...

DriverMax is not 100% fail safe. There is a chance that once in a while an incorrect update is offered. For instance my SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device (5.12.1.7000 by Analog Devices) is regularly offered an update to 6.14.1.4200. However, this driver has the same name, but is actually from a different manufacturer, VIA Technology. So I am certainly not going to install this one.

Before updating device drivers, each one should be carefully examined if it is really a good and correct update. On the other hand, you can always roll back device drivers that have been erroneously updated.

Unfortunately unlike the majority of you guys when it comes to installing new programs on my computer unless they come with a two week residential training course(preferably in Las Vegas) no matter how simple I will always make mistakes.As I am sure I have done on this occasion.

Anyway the position now is that when as Pat suggested I open up the driver concerned it says -The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

After clicking the reinstall option the following message then comes up The hardware was not installed because it cannot find the necessary software.

Any suggestions to rectify this would be welcomed otherwise because my computer seems to be working fine now and hopefully there will be no future problems. Perhaps I should be grateful and leave at that.

Tony.W. if you don't use the device, why not forget about? If everything else is working OK, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches. It may be that you have a part of the device on your computer, e.g. the appropriate slot for it be plugged into, but not the actual device itself.

I think you are absolutely right there is a slot for that device but nothing in it.Therefore I am taking your advice and will forget about it.(I get enough headaches as it is.)
