Clash between AdAware & Spybot S&D?

I've been using both Lavasoft's free AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy on the same machine for about 3 years and never had any problems with them. After updating them both in mid-December I found that every time a tried to run a full AdAware scan XP crashed & re-booted. I tried it 3 times & each time it crashed at exactly the same point - after 50 secs of scanning.

I'd only just reinstalled XP after a motherboard burn-out and thought the replacement motherboard & new RAM might be the problem. After several hours of checking with the help of a technician there appeared to be nothing wrong with the new hardware. Again I tried to scan with AdAware & again it caused XP to crash at the same point in time.

The technician advised re-installing XP & I agreed. Before we began re-installing all the other software I suddenly remembered something I'd read about AdAware & Spybot S&D sometimes clashing. So I downloaded AdAware, got all the updates & began the scan. It all went smoothly & XP didn't crash.

So reluctantly I've decided to dispense with Spybot S&D as it now seems to be incompatible with AdAware. This is seems a shame because they are both useful applications, but AdAware provides a slightly wider range of protection.

Where you read about the clash - did it mention that the OS crashes?

It might be that it sees S&D as a danger because S&D or TeaTimer both in a way monitor system data or scan through system data and whatever.

What about the burn out, could it have damaged some OS files on XP?

I want to know because I was thinking about going back to Lavasoft after years of hatred. :(

I did a search for Spybot S&D on the Lavasoft forum. HERE are the results.

I hope you find something of use in there.

I seem to recall that there was a suggestion when I installed Ad-Aware, that a particular search wasn't included in one or the other of them.

So reluctantly I've decided to dispense with Spybot S&D ...

I think you got rid of the wrong program. I removed AdAware years ago, when Lavasoft explicitly allowed some spyware, then deleted every post in the forum that dared to complain about it, and finally closed the forum entirely.

They then set up a private support site for paid users (of which I was one), but I was never able to log in. They never answered emails about that. That's when I removed every trace of AdAware from all my computers, and I have been happy ever since.

Hb_Kai, the XP op system was OK because it was a re-install & I'd previously run CheckDisk & Scannow. Also there was no problem at first until the last mid-December update for both of them.

Thanks for the link to the Lavasoft Forum, Irene. Also, if you go to YouTube and type in "AdAware v Spybot" in their search engine you get a whole load of amusing videos! So it seems I'm not the only one having problems. Funny that it should happen now, though, after 3 years of living together in harmony. :D

PW, neither of them have found very much for years, ever since I got rid of Norton & installed a proper firewall. So I'll keep one on the desktop & the other on the laptop and see how they both perform.
