Empalmado24 Posted January 2, 2009 Report Share Posted January 2, 2009 I built my mother -n-law a new computer and i am trying to move the old harddrive with windows xp from her old computer to the new computer i built. the BIOS came up and i only changed the date and time then saved and extied.......then......I got this message....We apologize for the inconvienence, but windows did not start succesfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.then i have the option to restart normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command promt, latest known good configuration.............none work.....i get sent back to the same screen everytime. Anyone know what i need to do next? I am assuming the the old configurations are diferent from the configurations for the new hardware.Help please! -pops- Posted January 2, 2009 Report Share Posted January 2, 2009 WXP "knows" the motherboard/computer that it belongs to. Any significant changes result in the O/S not recognising the new environment and results in the messages you were given. A new motherboard or a new machine is far too much for it to cope with.What you need to do is install a new copy of Windows (provided it is a full retail version) and then transfer all files and settings from the old drive to the new one using the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard.For different reasons note that you cannot load OEM versions of XP on to another machine successfully neither will "dedicated" versions like Dell or HP work on machines they weren't designed for. With OEM versions the setup may work OK but you will not be able to activate the machine with MS. Dedicated versions are exclusively for the brand they were designed for and contain "traps" which prevent them working with other machines. This is a cool forum!Have a search on line for the cheapest deals. Make sure that you order one that comes complete with SP3.
