Amy Posted January 9, 2009 Report Share Posted January 9, 2009 i have a windows xp home 2002.the internet is not slow but the compyter is messed up in a couple ways,for instance nothing wants to connect to the usb port and when it finally recognizes say my mp3 player it wont let me sync files.i have in the past so i do not know what happen.also it says on the defrag that i have to have atleast 15% free space and i have 10.anyone know how to help??is it possible to get a new OS? on this old computer? like Vista or anything that might make this better.im also considering reboot the whole thing to wipe it clean,but only as a last measure. Please help!!Thanks in advance!one more thing,the computer is a family computer but i am getting it so its going in my room what the best adapter?i want to be able to start playing games(have never before because didnt have own computer)like World of Warcraft and FATE so is there a way to boot up the memory to make this easier and smoother? (what size RAM, how much disc space, etc...) I think most OS' will go as far as being able to install them on as little as 36MB, but that's a minimum. Ubuntu, is free, from what I've found, easy to use (I only installed it last night and now trying it), and I didn't have any issue with drivers except one which was always annoying anyway.But it depends on what you want from an Operating System. You can still play music, watch videos, use the internet, whatever. Linux and its distributions are supposedly, faster and more secure, but it's tricky for people learning because instead of when installing new software you have the "Next", "Install", buttons you have to access a program called The Terminal and run a few lines of code so they're harder to learn. Windows operating systems are easier to use.Buying new RAM and stuff, you have to make sure you buy to correct type for your PC because if not it won't work. I usually take my laptops into shops and get them to do it for me. :)If you're happy with the operating system you have, your only problem is that it's got loads of problems like Malware, Spyware, Viruses and all that you can reformat it and put it back to its factory settings. Like, a virus may change the way your Windows Explorer will work, or change the way your web browser connects to the internet, or anything like that. Defence + pops up when there is a change being attempted asking for authentication of this. You can either allow, not allow or disable I think. Though, I never actually read that much. Alan2273 Posted January 9, 2009 Report Share Posted January 9, 2009 Looking at the info you have provided, it seems you only have 512mb's of memory so upgrading to 1Gb would help straight away.The memory you need is pc3200U and is easy to do.The motherboard will not take a bigger processor so there is no upgrade path there.The first thing i would do is to install AVG then do a complete scan, then use Super antispyware and do a complete scan again, the firewall does not matter as you will be using the Windows one by default, although it would be a good idea to install one that protects you both ways. rong Posted January 9, 2009 Report Share Posted January 9, 2009 Don't want to make it more difficult, but if you intend put more programs on that PC you may need to remove some programs as the hard drive must be nearly as full as it should be. another program that would help is http://www.ccleaner.com/ it will speed up a computer by cleaning up unneeded crap, if it hasn't been used before.
