how to have McAfee as backup, Nod32 as primary

What I would like to do is try nod32 as my main security.(I hear is lighter on resources than McAfee)

I also don't want to completely uninstall McAfee incase I want to use it for scanning or switching back easy.

So ... Is there an easy way to do this without uninstalling McAfee?

ESET/NOD32 offer a 1 month trial for their internet security suite (it includes ant-virus, anti-malware & a firewall), so that will help you make an assesment. If you have another anti-virus program you will need to permanently disable it. Since it's likely to start up again when you switch your computer on, this may be difficult. In that case, first check that you have the original disk or exe program, then you can uninstall it following McAfee's uninstall instructions. Later you can re-install it if you decide you want to go back to using it.

Note that running 2 anti-virus programs together, or having 2 software firewalls, can create problems & conflicts.

like have nod32 running all the time and have McAfee there dormant?

When you talk about "McAfee", is that McAfee VirusScan - what version?

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i that I have installed on my computers can be partially turned off, but not completely.

One problem with multiple AV programs is email integration. When a new message arrives (e.g. in Outlook), the two systems will start fighting over that email message. If you insist on having 2 AV systems, make sure you turn off email integration of one of them.

I have McAfee total protection currently.

I see. So I could uninstall everything but the virus scan.

Ideally what I was hoping was to disable all McAfee products until I called on them, like for a scan.

Nod 32 is an excellent security suite. I have just taken out a new three year subscription, how's that for confidence? :D

so I made the switch to nod32

my computer certainly runs faster and boots up faster

the only thing Im having trouble with is that it really really slowed my torrent speeds down

I tinkered with the nod32 http settings and that sped it up a bit and ive been looking everywhere online but anyway torrents are coming in real slow but im happy with nod32

Do you have any Anti Malware programs installed? Personally, I think you are asking for trouble downloading that sort of thing. It's your computer, so it's up to you of course. :D

i have ad-aware but i dont leave ad-watch running i only use it for scanning if thats what you mean.

also today i noticed a lag in web browsing so i think nod32 is slowing my streaming speed (watching hulu.com) as well as torrents

can you point me in the direction of any quick fixes to this ?

I've tried many combinations of anti-virus, anti-malware, & firewalls over the years & I haven't encountered a more effective single utility that covers all three than ESEST/NOD32 security suite. Since all 3 functions are integrated together by the same program it seems to work highly effectively. In addition I have AdAware (but not Ad Watch) & WinPatrol as well as SpyWare Blaster's database of nasty sites. However, I don't use P2P or BitTorrents so have no idea how to speed up their streaming speeds.

Maybe you also have other programs running that could be affecting your streaming speeds. Have you tried StartUp Inspector to prevent the running of unnecessary programa at start up? And also had a look at running processes in Task Manager to see what else might be running?

i still see a lag in browsing and streaming since i installed nod32

i keep a relatively tight ship as far as keeping the cpu and memory usage down so i know thats not that it, and my connection is good

on a side note i use autoruns to manage start up processes and other running processes

any more ideas on speeding things up?

Just a thought, winchendon: P2P bittorrent connections are notorious for being riddled with adware & trojans. Perhaps the slowdown in streaming is caused by NOD32 stripping them out. Have a look at your NOD32 logs (click on Display at the bottom of the NOD32 screen to turn on Advanced to show your logs). If there's nothing there, then I don't know what else could be the cause.
