Remote connection from work with a twist

I'd like to be able to remotely connect to my home desktop PC from my work PC. Both are running XP SP3. However, due to VERY high security settings on my work computer I CANNOT install any software on my work PC, even to join a virtual network.

I've looked up instructions for using Remote Desktop Connection but I just can't get it to work.

Can I get human instructions for how to do it?

Also, 2 other things:

Can I do it from home as well (my laptop in my bedroom to my desktop in the other room)? Should I use different settings if I do?

and Do I have to logoff/lock my desktop PC to make it remotely connectable? I know I'm supposed to, but will it work if I don't?

Thanks in advance,

- Keith
