Who is changing my settings?

Yet again I could not connect to the internet and had a look at what is doing this.

I was told some timeback by my ISP to reconfigure my D Link which is DSL 200 every time this happens and it does sometimes seem to fix the problem but then I cant get on again later in same time frame and find that on looking at properties on connection some how it has changed from

Click allow unsecrued password - normal settings.

to

Advance settings.

Now I dont do this but this time around is again just after getting download which I have set on now notify me but dont download.

Also this time didnt want on the downloads and had a hell of a job with it as it keeps putting up the yellow shield and putting back in the tick that I should download. So I untick and cancel and then when I go to log off I get the different window where it gives you the option of having the downloads done and then it switiches it self off. I dont take up the option hoping next time I log will go away but today still got the yellow shield and again had problems as above with connection.

So what I would like to know for sure is the two followingitems.

1. Is Allow unsecured password normal setting for ISP where on ADSL?

2. How do you get rid of download you don't want?

Last one was malicious tool which I think may have downloaded anyway as was working and it interrupted and I think I got rid of it by clicking on download but these don't show up so how do I know if they are the cause as always sending them down and

I do check the box for saying I don't want it and it becomes hidden on normal downloads but not malicious maybe?

Plus names of your anti-virus/malware utilities and firewall.

Plus a bit more info on what you mean by "looking at properties on connection". What's the title at the top of that window?

Latest - got one update plus tried not to take the malicious tool.

1 - Yes, an unsecured password is normal to make an ADSL connection. That just means the connection to the ADSL service itself does not require a secure (i.e. encrypted) password. Once connected, any links requiring secure encrypted connections will be done in the secure way.

2 - I've always had problems with Windows automatic updates so I don't use it & can't give any advice about it. Instead I have it switched off & update manually using Microsoft Update (HERE). Plus I subscribe to Microsoft free download notification service (THERE) which sends you emails about all upcoming downloads & updates.

With Microsoft manual Updates you can choose exactly which updates/downloads you want and need by selecting "Custom" when the download scanner appears. It also gives you other options afterwards for additional software and drivers. I've never had any problems with downloads since I switched to manual Windows updates several years ago.

Thanks for that - as I was never sure that the unsecured bit was the right place as it has been changed quite a few times.

made a note of it in my book now so I never get confused again.

How do you deal with the nagging you get if you don't have any of the options clicked - I get a nag on the task bar from Security Centre ?

I take it that you too conclude that auto updates alter the settings as I have long suspected. :D

Open Control Panel, then Security Centre. You'll see a pane on the left headed Resources with a list of items. Click on the bottom one that reads "Change the way Security Centre alerts me". That opens another pane with 3 items in it. Untick the middle one that reads: "Automatic Updates - alert me if my computer might be at risk because of my Automatic Update settings". Click OK & come back out of Control Panel. That should stop the nag & make the little shield disappear from the notification area.

I don't know if auto updates alters other settings, but it wouldn't surprise me as it has to allow your system to be altered without your participation.
