mono sound only

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My sound has suddenly stoped coming out of both desktop speakers.

I have checked all the usual places (system properties sound settings, speaker software settings. Media player properties etc etc) for balance, or anything out of the ordinary - all seem okay.

I then upgraded Windows Media Player to latest version - made no difference

Then I downloaded an alternative media player to try that - made no difference

Added a sound card to rule out the on-board sound - made no difference

Changed the speakers - made no difference

I cannot think of anything else (other than to reinstall windows) and it is driving me nuts now.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Adrian

Have you got speaker outlets at both back and front of your box? I know there is something a bit odd with some set ups, whereby if you couple the front speaker outlets the rear ones will not work....or something to that effect. Have you got a loose wire inside the box.

I remember fiddling around for ages trying to sort out a similar problem.

It turned out that the speaker jack had come slightly adrift in its socket - enough to lose contact with one of the connectors but not enough to be able to see it had done so.

Check everything is fully pushed into where it should be.

Hi,

Thanks for both responses.

I have tried with new speakers and new sound card and it makes no difference. The sound always used to work - just stoped for some reason. I have set my system back to the origional install last year (HDD image) when I know it worked, and it has made no difference, so it cannot be software related. the speaker system works fine from my notebook, so I am now suspecting my motherboard, and figure it is time for a new one.

If it does not work with a new mobo I will go to get my ears tested !!

Thanks

Adrian
