gordythegouge Posted March 17, 2009 Report Share Posted March 17, 2009 Hi,I've recently used Acronis True Image to restore my PC and have realised that posssibly I'm going to require a new base unit very soon. Can anyone tell me?.......if I purchase a new unit.......will I be able to use Acronis to put my old system settings on the new PC? Bearing in mind the restrictions Microsoft put on the use of XP on more than one PC and the fact that I really don't want the expense of a new OS when I have a perfectly legal copy of XP at the moment......can anyone tell me if I'm going to experience problems?Gordy Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
-pops- Posted March 17, 2009 Report Share Posted March 17, 2009 An installed copy of XP (and presumably later versions) "knows" the computer it belongs to. You cannot install the same setup into another machine. This is not to do with legalities, merely that it is set to work with the particular settings of the machine e.g. motherboard, memory and so on.If you have a full version of XP (not OEM or otherwise restricted) you can install it on another machine provided that you remove it from your current machine and explain to MS when activating what you are doing. It's quite possible, though, that if your current setup is very old it will have disappeared from MS records in any case. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dencandy Posted March 18, 2009 Report Share Posted March 18, 2009 Yes, and you can use the built-in Microsoft File & Settings Transfer Wizard to move that sort of information from the old computer to the new. Read about how to use it for XP at THIS LINK. You will have a 30 day "grace" period during which you can have the same genuine copy of Windows on 2 computers before you have to do what -pops- has described above. During that period you won't be able to get any MS updates (such as SP3) on the new installation until you've officially informed MS of the transfer - normally done quite quickly over the phone.As for whether you can use your Acronis images to transfer settings, etc to the new machine, I doubt it because the configuration of the new system will be quite different. But perhaps an Acronis expert can clarify this. My own view is that the MS File & Settings Transfer Wizard is probably the best thing for the job anyway.
