Straight through/crossover cable

Recommended Posts

The simplest way is to try to imagine what would happen if you tried to go in through a revolving door the wrong way.

If you want to go round the roundabout you need to be facing in the right direction and going the right way.

Hope this is clear enough ? :)

Crossover cables are used where two devices have the same interface, e.g. connecting a hub to a hub, or a switch to a switch. The most common use is to connect two PCs directly to each other, without the use of any kind of router, hub, or switch. This creates a peer-to-peer network - to allow file and Internet sharing between two PCs.

On a crossover cable, the wiring of pins 1, 2, 3, and 6 are "crossed-over" to pins 3, 6, 1, and 2.

On a patch cable, the wiring configuration is identical on both ends of the cable.
