I have a Dell Inspiron and it has its own ways of doing things anyway go into F2 which is Bio and I am lost - but have a look anyway and go to start up and see it has this hitachi card only so click onto that then save that and it starts up ok. Happened a few times so someone said to download Norman_Malware_Cleaner and it found this key for windows update corrupted and I had turned it off some time back as it was always playing up. It quarantined the key and boot up was fine for 2 weeks and then freeze and got another version of the Norman cleaner - and it found the key corrupted again and I deleted it this time around and then got the nag screen which I had actually turned off - so M$ has gremlins in the computer when I download manually and put another key in and turned on updates nag screen!!!!Is this possible? Anyone else having this problem?You are supposed to run the cleaner in safe mode by using F8 but this didnt work on Dell - so ran it anyway I do wish they would just load up windows and be the sameold which I was Used to - complaints from this office are met by the better half with - OK go buy a new one they are cheaper than high blood pressure :D My problem is I am not that good at doing these things particularly going into Bio - scarey Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I understand now that there is an undesired registry key, and it can only be removed in Safe Mode?Usually it is F8 that starts Windows in Safe Mode. Tap it repeatedly immediately when the computer starts, and you should get a menu that lists Safe Mode options; choose Safe Mode with networking.Most Dell computers use F8 for Safe Mode, but I have also heard that F1 or the Delete key is used for certain models. But you wrote in your initial postYou are supposed to run the cleaner in safe mode by using F8...Isn't that what you should be doing? It's just telling you automatic updates notification is disabled because some malware will do that to your system without your knowledge. If you go ahead and make the change automatic updates notification will be turned back on. Is that what you want? If you want to keep it off you can safely ignore this warning.The rest of the scan shows you have no detected infections. Personally, I'd leave things as they are.I think the problem with your computer freezing during boot up is caused by something else, as hubby indicates. Lamb Chop Posted April 18, 2009 Author Report Share Posted April 18, 2009 Thanks pat I will try it in safe mode but F8 doesn't work will try another one like ansome said .Dencandy - thanks for that so this isnt what is making it freeze.I thought I had fixed it but today booted up and frozen again.Turned off from off/on reboot went into Bio which is F2 and the start up boot and then into F12 and saved it on the only card I seem to have which is Hitachi and then numbers and it started up okay so made another systems point in case. Cross everything and no I do not want to have auto updates ever again just annoyed that something had redone my nag on the Security so that I got the red shield up. Dencandy Posted April 19, 2009 Report Share Posted April 19, 2009 Next time this happens, once you've got it running properly check in Event Viewer (which makes a record of all important events from the moment the computer is switched on to the moment it shuts down). To find Event Viewer do this: Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. You'll then see a box with a short list of items. Click on "System" and you should get a long list of events. Start scrolling down and right click on any with a white cross in a red circle, then select Properties. Pay attention to those round about the time of the problem & make a note of what Properties says. Try to work out the problem from there or post back the results here. Lamb Chop Posted April 19, 2009 Author Report Share Posted April 19, 2009 Dencandy - had a look at the event viewer as suggested.Only two red bits and they were not on days of no start up in correct order.Both on same day and to do with DNS client.The DNS client terminated with following error.No protocol sequences have been registered.And secondUnable to start DNS Client could not start remote procedure call interface for this service. To correct the problem you may need to restart RPC and DNS Client - says go type up this and that.So not to do with it eh Also I found this somehow mucking around PC Pitstop - got it off now I think about it WinPatrol info and clicked onto free scan to optimize your running etc. anyway it found all sort of problems it says but to fix them I would have to buy the program at US29.99 - not that I cant buy it - but do I need to and it is a scam or a real find of nasties that actually need fixing?Fixes for internet connection- caches of web browsers and tweaks of both and delete some unnecessary startup programs etc etc.Started up okay today. Crossing fingers and had to restart once due to something on internet connection so did a reconfigure on my D link DSL 200 and it restarted and was fine.this happens now and then. I don't know about this myself, but you could go to Microsoft Help & Support (HERE) & try typing DNS Problems into the search box & see what comes up. Unless someone else on the forum can help.Regarding PC Pitstop, most of these so-called speed-up and similar programs just do what you can do with disk clean up and CCleaner yourself. I believe andsome recently recommmended a free one called "Advanced Windows Care" which he said did speed up his computer.
