swap hard drive to another computer

Recommended Posts

Hi does anyone know if i can take my hard drive from my old computer and install it in another one i have

Oh yes you can do that. But, it might not, in fact probably will not, work. It all depends what you are proposing to do when you have moved it from one computer to the other.

So...a bit more detail of what the computers are, and what their OSs are, and what you are wanting/expecting to do, might help someone to help you.

If you are expecting to move the hard drive, and take with it a working operating system, I think you are going to get an answer you will not want.

I see pops is watching ths thread and he has much more expertise than I have, but I would be inclined to think the PSU swap is more likely to succeed that the HD swap. It all depends of course of physical and electrical attributes..

Pops may come back with some suggestion.

Yes, I feel that you would be better installing a new PSU and having two machines rather than one that is mangled together. You would not be able to make Windows from your old machine work in another one as it "knows" the machine it belongs to.

If you just want to use the drive as an auxiliary (2nd) drive for storage then there is no problem at all. All you do in that case is connect up the drive on the secondary IDE/SATA and then reformat.

I you want information on reformatting, come back to us.

The hard drive from my old computer is now the D drive in my newer computer and as such works fine for storage and back ups etc. :D
