I just found this site when looking for a good place to ask some questions about Windows and everything that comes with it, read a couple posts, and figured this is the right place to be. So, my question is as follows:Is it possible to create a folder in Windows Vista, either throught the base OS itself or through some installed software, to create a folder with extremely low access rights given to the files within?For example, I sometimes download programs hoping that they do what they say they will, but freeware/shareware becomes quite suspicious when it keeps nagging for a fee and stuff. The reason I ask the question is because I would use that folder as a sort of "holding" folder, before I scanned the contents with AV software. And if it appeared there would be no problem running the setup.exe or programs within, I would simply run them. But if it was a virus or worm of some sort, it would have no rights, and therefore not be able to do anything to my computer while in that folder.If you could answer that question, you'd solve a nagging question for me!Thanks in Advance,Sam Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AlanHo Posted May 30, 2009 Report Share Posted May 30, 2009 I'm not sure whether this will give you what you want - but you can create a folder in Windows Explorer - right click on it - select properties - then security and modify the settings to allow access only by the Administrator.Other users of the computer will not have access. It does work for a multi-user PC, but I only wish to prevent any malicious files within (on my user account, presumably) from being able to modify anything on my computer. amateur_professional Posted June 10, 2009 Report Share Posted June 10, 2009 To follow up with what pat said, i'm recommend Avast AV. Its a wonderful anti-virus/firewall/adware/boot-scanner. It also has an active, background scanner that would pick up files as they come in, which sounds like your concern is. also scans flies as you access them, such as folders on your thumb drive, as you access them. Best part of it all is its FREE! I've now fixed 4 firends computers with the boot time scan and saved myself form literally dozens of exactly the incident you described, downloading freeware/shareware of questionable origin, only to find out instincts were correct and it was infected. by far the most thorough and in depth free AV i've personally ever seen.Avast Home Editionhttp://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.htmlfree trial for 60 days, after that just register your name and email and they send you a reg key good for a year Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
