Windows files Overwritten!!

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Last night I got an error message telling me that some of my oringal windows files had been overwitten and that I had to enter the CD for XP pro service pack III so that the originals could be restored.

Unfortunately I only have CD for SP II (i upgraded to SP III on line) the pop up kept asking for the CD for SP III.

I tried to turn automatic updates back on:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

But when I went to Run->services.msc->automatic updates and tried to enable them is said access is denied!!

Thing is my PC is running fine so I'm not even sure I can trust the original message? How can i check my install in a safe and secure way?

Baz

Are you sure the message was genuine?

Widows is very protective of itself and it is not normally an easy job to delete files which belong to the operating system.

Have yo tried a System Restore or a re-install from your system backup?

Try a repair installation of your Windows

Guide here

This repair will allow you to keep your current documents and applications intact but will reinstall Windows XP. This is not the same as a format and reinstall of Windows XP and is a lot less time consuming.
