Tony.W.
I have tried several times over the past few weeks to install a Java Windows xp update 6.14 from Filehippo each time an error message has occurred.Today I tried to install the same update from the Java website page and I'm still getting the same error message. The Java help page advice is to remove previous versions of Java.In Add/Remove programs I have six updates listed and also Java Runtime Environment 5.0.Could somebody please advise me as to whether I just simply remove the last update, all of the past updates, or all of the Java items that are listed. Many thanksTony. Boris
You only need the latest version 6 Java installed - the rest can be got rid of.I had a similar problem to you on only one of my (several) machines - the error message being from memory something about being unable to unzip something during the install ? - all the others installations of 6.14 were fine. The solution was not obvious as the problem was still there after uninstalling all of Java.I finally resolved it by doing a manual delete of all Sun/Java odds and sods left in Documents and Settings (for each user) under Application Data. You do need to show Hidden Files if you do need to do this.

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
In future I will be sure to remove any old updates prior to installing new ones.As of Java RTE version 6.10 there is no longer a need to uninstall older versions. Once you have removed all older versions, new ones will be installed into the same install directory. As for your earlier download problems, it is best to always download software from the original developer, in this case Sun Microsystems - see this topic for download links.
