Windows XP Search Function

I can't get this to operate. I input the partial name of a file, and the search tells me:- "Search complete no file exists with that name"

But I know I have a file of the name input.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have 'Show hidden files' enabled?

When you specify a partial file, do you use wildcard characters, such as an asterisk, e.g.

part*.txt

?

P.S. or is the file(s) you are looking for perhaps located in the WINDOWS folder? I have noticed that Windows Search does not search/return results from this folder.

I hate to disagree Pat, but it does on my computer.

I have clicked on "Search hidden files" but still no joy.

Did not use* but now have done, still no joy.

File is in "My Documents" folder

It is an Open Office file, do I have to specify the file extention ie .odt?

Have now searched for a singular picture, putting in the DSC number and the search found the file.

But tried the Open Office file again and still nothing found on the search

Sorry, there is not much more I can help you. Windows Search has never been very trustworthy; I have used Desktop Search engines for many years instead. They are more stable, much faster, and also allow an immediate preview of documents in the search result.

I can't understand the problem. I find that the search facility finds all NEAR matches. I just enter a word or sentence.

The words Start up found all below with hidden files not ticked. Or am I missing the point?

No you are not missing the point.

I have now found the answer to my problem.

I have been checking onto "Documents" in answer to the question where do you want to search.

If I check "All files and Folders" the system works ok.

Must state it was only by asking the question on the forum that I investigated further and found the answer.
